Health and Physical Education:
My name is Ashley Goodman, and I am excited to be your child’s physical education teacher for this school year. For the past 5 years, I have had the opportunity to teach, coach, and mentor many different grade levels of children. I am really looking forward to getting to know your child and teaching him/her Health and Physical Education.
Let me tell you a little about myself. Having grown up in Atlanta, I have stayed fairly close to home for my formative school years. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Georgia State University and then my Masters degree in Physical Education from the University of South Florida. During my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate enough to have been selected to play collegiate level women’s basketball. What an experience that was!
Currently, my favorite past-times are spending time with my family, playing sports with my friends, and participating in triathlon (swim, bike, and run) races throughout the Spring and Summer months.
DeKalb Preparatory Academy Health & Physical Education Program:
Physical education is such a vital part of all students’ lives. It is critically important for us to provide them with the building blocks for an active and healthy lifestyle so that as they grow, they develop a wide array of loco-motor, manipulative, and non-manipulative skills. In addition, physical education programs help them learn how to play and contribute in game settings, as well as develop an understanding of themselves, which leads them towards having a good self-image that benefits them throughout their lifetime.
One of the most important features of my Physical Education class is the program called “Fit for a Lifetime.” The Fit for a Lifetime Program contains educational curriculum with a strong emphasis on fitness, nutrition, interdisciplinary curriculum (using Math, Spelling, Reading, Social Studies and Science), and health-related physical activities. In conjunction with this program, each student makes his/her Physical Education portfolio where he/she puts personal worksheets, assessments and activity logs throughout the school year.
The students will:
* Gain respect for self and others, as well as for the equipment and the learning environment.
* Develop, demonstrate and understand fundamental movement skills and health-related
fitness components.
* Use a combination of cognitive and physical skills to be creative and solve problems.
* Enjoy physical activity outside of the classroom setting.
Thanks,
Mrs. Ashley Goodman
